Employment Opportunities
Director of Music Position
Broadway United Methodist Church has had a strong music program for many years. All of its music directors for over 75 years have had earned music degrees. A music degree is preferred but not required.
The church sanctuary seats 1,100. Average attendance at the current worship service at 10:30 a.m. is 300.
An excellent 53 rank pipe organ is the primary instrument used at worship. The sanctuary also has a grand piano that is used for special music or occasional accompaniment of the choir.
The church organist is Nancy Ryan, who has a master’s degree in organ from the University of Michigan and a bachelor’s degree in music from Murray State University. She also rehearses with the chancel choir.
The chancel choir is the primary choir at Sunday worship. It has 25 volunteer members. It also serves at special worship services. The gospel choir has 20 volunteer members. It performs occasionally and is frequently accompanied by taped music. The handbell choir has 10 members who play a 2½ octave set of bells. There is currently no children’s choir, but the church has a large number of children ages 2 to 5. A children’s choir, with volunteer assistance, is a goal.
The director would be responsible for choosing the music for all choirs, and for rehearsing and directing. Broadway members appreciate a broad range of music, from classical to contemporary Christian.
The church is exploring the idea of an alternative, informal worship service at 8:30 a.m. Sunday in the church fellowship hall. It would be helpful if a candidate for the Director/Minister of Music had experience with alternative worship services.
The Director/Minister of Music must be a person of high integrity and an enthusiastic follower of Jesus Christ who recognizes the importance of recruiting members for the music program. The ability to work on a team with church personnel and the Worship Committee is an essential quality. The director should be involved in formulating the worship service, with the advice and approval of the minister, who has the ultimate authority over the worship service. The Broadway music program traditionally follows the liturgical year in its choice of hymns and anthems.
The full-time position would include all music work outlined above, plus nonmusical responsibilities, including administrative, Christian education and member visitation.
Please submit a resumé and at least three references to church receptionist Donna Terry at receptionbumc@comcast.net or at the church office (701 Broadway Paducah,KY 42001).
Salary ranges have not been determined but candidates may express their compensation expectation. All finalists must consent to a full background check, as required by the United Methodist Book of Discipline.
