History of Brooks Pool

In the late 1920’s the YMCA built the pool and gym facility for the residents of Paducah.  Many people remember learning to swim here back then.  In the 1930’s Paducah Junior College bought the property and it was used by the students for their athletic program.

The property was then purchased by Broadway United Methodist Church in the 1960’s.  It became a mission of the church ministering to a wide range of people.  Many people in the community still use our pool; children; youth, adults have all learned to swim, participate in aerobics exercise, swim for fun, birthday parties, and even scouting activities are held at our facility.

Brooks Pool was named after the late J.Polk Brooks. An early renovation of the facility was made possible with monetary donations after his death.

Brooks Pool works with the American Red Cross to provide  lifeguard training for  youth in our community.  This allows them to find  jobs at local country clubs, city pools and water parks.  We also continue to offer swim lessons to children and adults of all ages, day and evening water aerobics classes, and private rentals for day cares, scout troops, churches and others.  Being an indoor pool allows us to offer activities year round.

We are pleased to be able to continue the heritage of the Brooks Recreational Center. It’s a historic downtown landmark open to everyone!
